PIECE OF THE WEEK

Listen to a featured piece each week and learn about the composer and fun facts about the piece

Chopin's Fantasie Impromptu is one of his most famous and frequently played works. It is characterized by its challenging hemiola, or cross-rhythms, in which one hand plays sixteenth notes (four notes to a beat) while the other plays triplets (three notes to a beat). This creates the frenzied, agitated mood the piece opens and closes with. The middle section has a completely different feel--much slower and more gentle. Chopin actually never published this work--it wasn't published until after his lifetime (the word for this is "posthumous"). Click on the link below to listen!
